Designing your wedding cake can feel like a daunting task. It forms the centrepiece of your reception and is the crucial part to your ‘cutting of the cake’ photo! Through our experience, we've listed five top tips to help you find the perfect wedding cake for you.

1. Inspiration

Start collecting images, not just of cakes but of elements that make up your wedding day style. Imagery of the type of wedding flowers you might like.  Save the date or wedding invitations, table centres and decorations. Images of your wedding dress and bridesmaid outfits as well as colour swatches are a great help! Share this information with your wedding cake designer and they will be able to work from this, with you, to create a fitting design.

1  2. Research your cake designer

It’s very important to have trust in your cake designer but also to see the quality of their work. It’s important to see the finish they achieve on real orders.  Looking at a portfolio of recent work can give a much more accurate picture of the designer’s capabilities and eye for detail.

When booking your cake designer allow for at least 3-6 months before your big day but for the popular summer months, dates can be booked a year in advance.

3. Try before you buy

Wedding cakes are expensive so make sure you are happy with how it tastes as well as its overall look. A good cake designer will be able to offer you a selection of samples at your consultation and tweak the flavours to your requirements.  Remember to choose the flavours you like and not what you think you should have or everyone else would want. You can have a different flavour per tier, so remember, you don’t just have to choose one!

4.Don’t get caught up in the details.

A good cake designer will be able to direct you on cake sizes, number of portions and the logistics of delivery and setting up at the venue. All you need to do is enjoy the experience and let them do the rest!

5. Budget

Be honest about your budget. Check out their price guide, ask them for a ball park cost or simply share with them your budget. With this knowledge your cake designer will be able to direct your design to meet your cost expectations and create a stunning cake for your special day!

Most of all enjoy the process and remember if you like it, then its right for you!
